L’ESPRIT DU CLAN might come from a different place than the usual Canadian artists that comprise Galy records, but are similar in style and language. The French band’s third effort “Chapitre III: Corpus Delicti” it cut from the same cloth as melodic death metal bands on Galy such as SHADES OF DUSK. Although this group speaks a different dialect from French Canadian Galy acts such as the GHOULUNATICS, they still speak French

“Chapitre III: Corpus Delicti” is solid in many areas, most notably the guitar playing. DU CLAN does not reinvent the wheel with their guitar playing style, but they do offer hard and catchy riffs. Many of their rhythms owe much to Gothenburg heavyweights, THE HAUNTED. Tracks like the album’s opener “Mesdames & Messieurs” and “Le Calme Et Le Silenceare” are a display of classic, hammer on string work. The guitarists fluidly bridge into chugging guitar-and-double-bass tandem breakdowns. Along with a hardcore-type vocal style, these parts really bring out the metalcore influence. However, their breakdowns maintain their flow due to the constant beating of the kick drum. The concrete tone of the guitar keeps the music heavy and pissed.

THE HAUNTED’s style is frequently touched upon, as is AT THE GATES, especially in their arrangement of melodies. ATG were never as obvious with their melodies as their Gothenburg buds IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQUILITY, opting for tranquil instrumentals instead of combining the melodic and the extreme into their usual repertoire. Except for the clean-guitar led “J'Ai Pas Les Mots,” DU CLAN focuses primarily on thrashing, up beat rhythms. Tracks such as “1992” and “Dans Cette Fournaise” contain rhythms of a distinct ATG flavor.

L’ESPRIT DU CLAN throws the occasional curve ball in the form of Regae-inspired vocals in “Un Message De Paix” and a nod to CROWBAR in “Le Calme Et Le Silence,” but usually sticks with the deathcore/metalcore formula of combining hardcore and Gothenburg, Sweden metal. They have a powerful take on this popular style, although little of what they do is out of the ordinary.
