IMMOLATION return with their twelfth full-length album, “Descent.” The said album follows their 2022 effort “Acts of God.” The New York-based Death Metal band have progressed tremendously since their 1991 debut, “Dawn of Possession.” Their song writing has matured, and compositions have become more complex without losing their trademark sound. Over the last few albums, the group has found a formula that works. Fans know what to expect from the band. Those who love the direction IMMOLATION has taken over the last few albums will surely enjoy “Descent.” However, this formula makes it hard to differentiate between the last few albums.

Being formulistic doesn’t take away from their skill or song-writing prowess. “Descent” is compositionally solid. IMMOLATION knows how to build tension through shifting tempos and catchy grooves. “These Vengeful Winds” opens the album with a clean, brooding guitar passage. Even though this passage is brief, it makes the music so heavy once the drums and the rest of the instruments come crashing in. The instrumental interlude “Banished” provides atmosphere and creates more duality for the ending title track. Guitarists Robert Vigna and Alex Bouks have a knack for harmonizing riffs.  “Attrition” opens with a stomping groove with an added layer of guitar harmony.

“Descent” is one of the best tracks on the album due to the catchy riff that enters the mix around the three-minute mark. “God’s Last Breath” progresses nicely through Steve Shalaty’s various drumming techniques. He leads the band’s fast tempos throughout the album including the blast beats on “The Ephemeral Curse.”

“Descent” gives its listeners all the hallmarks of an IMMOLATION album—breakneck speed, chopping riffs, crushing grooves, weird pinch harmonics, and growls that are easy to understand. IMMOLATION has found a formula that works, which is the album’s only drawback—it’s hard to tell this album apart from their last couple of records. Don’t expect any surprises. Fans of their recent material should enjoy “Descent.”
