NECROGORE is a Death Metal band from Italy, although the sound  on their full-length debut “Ectoplasmic Rape Phenomena” is rooted in classic Swedish Death Metal. Swedish death metal is not exactly hidden these days. Bands wearing the OSDM (Old School Death Metal) moniker are, at times, copycats. NECROGORE has the hall marks of Swedish Death Metal (think ENTOMBED and GRAVE), but they have their own personality and play with a high level of skill.

The other thing I noticed after style is their lyrics. Song titles like “Forced to Eat Shit” and “Leeches on my Dick,” grabbed my attention. Death Metal needs to be offensive at times, not to mention disgusting. Just the thought of being forced to eat shit makes me want to throw up. Song titles of such putridity need strong music to back it up, and NECROGORE brings the goods.

Spooky, cinematic music opens the album, setting the stage for the carnage to come. The metal slowly seeps into the keys, gradually building until the band drops the hammer on “Raptured, Tortured and Chained.” This track has catchy D-beat patterns. These patterns precede fret work with DISMEMBER qualities.

One aspect of Death Metal often lost on its audience is a lack of refrain. “Forced to Eat  Shit” repeats its chorus lines, so these words echo in my mind, FORCED TO EAT SHIT! The riffs on this song rule, too. While solos are not prevalent throughout the album, the band throws in SLAYER-esque wham bar solos in this song. “Leeches on my Dick” follows suite with even more divebombs and whammy rips. The ending to this song is pure evil!

I originally thought this album should get a 7/10, but another listen brought perspective on the awesomeness of the album. Fans of the aforementioned bands should check out this raw piece of metallic slab.
