Cool songs: Welcome to the Machine, Innuendo, Neon Knights

Something has got to be in recording albums containing new (not always better) versions of someone else’s songs. Many beginner-bands build their repertoire with such tracks, very often by giving them a new sound and making them quasi-original. But why do international stars, with nearly thirty-years-experience on the stage do the same? The answer to this question is surprisingly easy – to gain some easy money and to remain still on the scene, as the lack of new ideas prevents those ‘stars’ from writing an album, which would allow them to stay there for a longer time.

And this is the newest proposition of QUEENSRŸCHE, the heavy metal veterans from America. They decided to record an album, consisting of songs, originally recorded by bigwigs, such as PINK FLOYD, BLACK SABBATH or QUEEN. An album, which appears to be a huge… misunderstanding. First of all, the legendary songs, being the most recognisable compositions in the world, in their performance sound like lullabies. They even gained some pop-rock features, which is inexcusable. The songs have lost their kick, they are no longer golden – QUEENSRŸCHE’s performance covered them with rust. Some time ago (1999), HELLOWEEN, another bigwig, came up with an idea, to record a similar album, and the reactions of the world were different: from calling it a total failure, to extreme enthusiasm. The second option in this battle was represented by more ‘professional’ staff and managed to defend the album, mainly thanks to the choice of songs and very heavy performance, which sometimes changed the spectrum of perceiving those compositions. In case of QUEENSRŸCHE, the situation is the other way round – poor choice (apart from very popular and well known tracks as ‘Welcome to the Machine’ or ‘Innuendo’) and that uninteresting, boring, almost pop-rock performance, resulted with this, that those compositions lost their nobility and what is worse, dignity.

Recording covers is not a bad idea, but some effort should be put into the whole undertaking, so that the songs would gain different dimensions. In this case, the idea has been totally wasted. And what hurts the most, is the profanation of legends.
