Cool Songs: Orpheu, Ominorej (a minha morte)
I must admit I gave a chance to this album moved by the exoticism of the language, hoping it could bring something more original and impress me. HYUBRIS is a Portuguese band that sings completely in its native tongue, basically mixing elements from Gothic and Folk.
“Forja” is their second release, being the first one “Hyubris”, released in 2005. The problem here is that I was waiting for more pure Portuguese folk instead of more Gothic tunes alla Netherlands. I thought I had found it on “Ode ŕ luna”, but it wasn't really like that. Besides, Filipa's vocals are just too bad and forced sometimes. “Eternidade” is an average Gothic song while “Orpheu” is perhaps the best Folk song on the recording. Next there is a song to forget, “Historia perdida”, like its name states (Portuguese for 'lost history'), and then another folk one, “Condăo”. The following “Zépico” is a Gothic tune again, so this goes, one Goth and one Folk; but come on, we have thousands of plain Gothic songs, we want more Portuguese folk, that is fresh for the world.
Maybe I was expecting something like MAGNIFIQAT (from Italy). The melancholic touch is great on songs such as “Eternidade” and “Medeia”, but there is no need of those cheap EPICA operatic attempts. Instead of doing so, they could manage to make a metallic and female version of SANGRE CAVALLUM, that would be awesome. “Almas”, for instance, is another song that we could easily erase from the album, but not everything is lost, I really love to listen to different languages, so I keep waiting for more songs like “Ominorej (a minha morte)”, great vocals and folk instrumentation, a beautiful lyric poem to my death.
