SpikeFarm Records is synonymous with Finnish heavy metal. CHILDREN OF BODOM, FINNTROLL, and NIGHTWISH—three of the biggest names in Finland all call SpikeFarm home. So it comes as no surprise that SpikeFarm would also sign MOONSORROW. The group’s 2004 release, “Suden Uni” is like a compilation album of Finish heavy metal. The influence of such successful Finnish acts as AMORPHIS, THY SERPENT, ENSIFERUM, and most of all, FINNTROLL are easy to identify.

“Suden Uni” is an epic album told in true Nordic, folk fashion. Much of the keyboard sound supports the group’s name, creating the perfect soundtrack for viewing icy fjords and feeling the bite of angry north winds. When combined with throaty black metal vocals, these atmospheres have a hint of malevolence. This malevolence transitions into a feeling of triumph or celebration with cleanly-sung pagan heralds and danceable accordion music enters via keyboards.

Fans of FINNTROLL are sure to enjoy the accordion aspect of the album. These parts are fun and may fit right at home in a pub or party. The rhythms are perfect for swinging a large mug of ale. The problem I have with the use of accordions is the drastic change in tone it creates. Sure, it conveys their folk elements quite well, but takes away from the dark aspects of the album. To me, an accordion put to black metal is like Weird Al making a parody of DIMMU BORGIR. To those of you who welcome this unconventional heavy metal instrument, “Suden Uni” is something worth checking out.
