Cool Songs: The final battle, Night Mother, Slaughter Begins

From what I have come to know of the Slovenian Black Metal scene is that it is indeed minuscule but a solid one. The country is also known for breeding bands such as Somrak, Vinternatt, Bleeding Fist and now one of the latest additions to the scene, the 5 peice aggression, Mora.

The outfit was formed back in 2007 which currently consists of Jupoll handelling vocal duties, Lord Scavenger on Guitars and backing vocals, Mortifix on Bass, Mraz on Guitar and Skhh behind the drumkit. Considering the time since the bands formation and comparing it to what they have accomplished as a unit with their live performances and the demo release “Slaughter Begins” is quite impressive and commendable.

Their demo “Slaughter Begins” consist of 4 tracks. Clocking at 19:22 the offering consists of the title track, “Slaughter Begins”, “Night Mother”, “In the mourning mist” and “The final battle” all of which have been composed between mid-paced and a fast-paced range. The title track starts off with 4 counts on the snare and a blast beat going into a traditional styled Black Metal execution, which after 4:11 minutes of traditional orthodox styled blast beats and riffage leads to my favorite track of the Demo, “Night Mother”. Although Mora focuses on executing fast-mid paced Black Metal they score some points at the breakdown point of “Night Mother”, which is around 3:48 of the song, consisting of a slow paced closed hi-hat drum beat complimenting the clean guitar which runs in the background. These slow paced, clean guitar parts play a very minor role in Mora's music as they quickly shift back to the aggressive side of the track.

Although “In the mourning mist” is my least favorite song from the Demo, the fourth and closing track “The final battle”makes up for it with its piano introduction to the song which is executed perfectly which makes it another one of my favorites by this Slovenian outfit. Like I said before the band doesn't focus much on the milder side of the genre as they waste no time shifting back to the aggression they're known for.

Regarding the production of this Demo it is indeed in a considerably polished and commendable state considering the state of quality the average underground Black Metal band comes up with. Although Mora have used a drum machine on this Demo, they have been very careful not to state the obvious and continue to preserve the cold rawness of their true nature. Overall, Mora is a great band with great space for potential to experiment and push their limits on the aggressiveness and variation. Certainly worth checking out as Mora gets my profane seal of approval!
