The band was formed in Lombardy, Italy in 2017, initially as a duo whose the band’s name is an English acronym (Enjoy Fearing Your Death). Currently, the band is a trio of old-school Death Metal maniacs, who released their first album in 2021 with the Ukrainian label Metal Scrap Records.
I am glad that young people are trying to go back to the Metal’s roots. And in their case, to the roots of Death Metal. On the one hand, it is a secondary action presenting what has already been created, but on the other hand, it is a tribute to the precursors of this genre. Many of them are still playing, many have already finished their activities. But it is thanks to such young bands that old-school extreme Metal is still alive and is not a thing of the past. Besides, EFYD’s music is not entirely secondary, which I will write about below…
The distinguishing feature of “Like Shadows” is the primitive, coarse sound of the guitars merged with the clean sound of extensive bass parts, often emphasizing some phrases or taking the lead. This guitar sound very much saturates the material with an “old-school garage” mood, and also it brings back memories of demo tapes or debut albums of underground bands from the early 90s.
And also… The powerful and brutal playing is of course the basis of compositions, which are dominated by fast and heavy licks. Although the songs are not unitary. They combine simple licks with technical combinations. They constantly transform from blasting tempos through breakneck passages and rhythmic accents, to medium-fast and dynamic phrases that can sometimes slow down crushingly. Most of the tracks start with an interesting introduction followed by further evolution.
The growlinga are deep and monstrous. Typical for Death Metal. At times the vocals change sound or recite.
The arrangements, although inspired by Death Metal from the 90s, also contain clear influences of Thrash Death Metal of that time, as well as progressive-death-metal patterns, and even Blues or Jazz themes (played in a death-metal style) and psychedelizing playings.
EFYD’s music is a powerful element. Primitive on the one side, but very intelligent on the other side.
