Cool Songs: Cold Inside, Join the Legions
Released in 2004, Cold Inside consists of seven tracks of pure, misanthropic black metal. Originally released as a limited edition tape, sole member Thorlukh reissued the tape in CD format on Behemoth productions with three, previously unreleased tracks from a rehearsal session in 2002.
Cold Inside bears a striking resemblance to Swedens iconic black metal horde MARDUK, most notably the Legion era. The first track on Cold Inside is titled Join the Legions, which reminds me of MARDUKs Legion on the Haven shall Burn When we are Gathered album. Thorlukhs vocals are a mix of black metal and death metal with a throaty black metal style that stays within his vocal rangethe mid range. This vocal style also retains traits of ex-MARDUK screamer, Legion. The guitars are the most striking similarity to MARDUK due to the constant tremolo picking style found during the early to mid periods of MARDUKs career.
The picking style never strays from the style trademarked by Scandinavian black metal bands, but changes pace and octaves to keep the music interesting. During some riffs, the guitars strings are picked in a whirl wind of speed, while other moments show the guitar floating and shimmering around the same area like a malevolent, haunting spirit. The distortion of the guitar gives the music a cold, bleak tone. The drumming is thunderous and sounds as a drum should, without any hint of trash can or type writer drumming. Because the drums hit hard, the violent mood is perfectly related.
WOLFTHORN is doing nothing out of the ordinary for this style of metal, but they do it well. The distorted guitars contain a massive amount of evil, as do the satanic lyrics spewed forth by the hateful lungs of Thorlukh. The drums explode this evil brew into a flowing stream of hell fire. Christians beware!
