“Attack on God” is the initial effort by the Ukrainian anti-Christian black metallers, SEMARGL. “Attack on God” is a good mix of blasting, hateful black metal and eerie, keyboard-produced atmosphere. The production is cryptic and cold, without coming across as thin in the guitar department. Vocally, the band mostly uses the typical black metal screams. These screams are sharp like a razor and appear to emanate from the back of front man, Rutarp’s throat. Occasionally, he will switch his vocal style to a deep, guttural death metal style or overlap both styles. The death growls seem a bit out of place (except for the head-squishing death/grind of “The Sign of Chosen Name”) for this style and get annoying after a few minutes.

Much of the album emulates iconic symphonic black metal bands like DIMMU BORGIR and EMPEROR. Majestic piano passages and floating synths ignite a spark of the dramatic on tracks like “The Falling,” and “The Cut up Dream.” “Denunciation of God” sounds as if it came straight from the notebook of MORTIIS when he played with EMPEROR. The music infernally rises and falls in an-all-too similar fashion to EMPEROR’s “Night of the Graveless Souls.” These EMPERORisms only last for a short while in the track, and then the group changes its style to fit in with the likes of DIMMU BORGIR and ARCTURUS, with piano-based sections. Also, the guitar rhythms become thrashier with some heavy gallops that one might hear on a DIMMU BORGIR or OLD MAN’S CHILD album.

“Attack on God” can be great in moments, relating catchy black thrash, depressive tremolo-picked rhythms, and beautiful piano notes. The group keeps their music dynamic by switching the pace and style and the appropriate times. All things considered, though, “Attack on God” is a developmental album. The guttural growls seem out of place and annoying, and the group can’t seem to make up their mind exactly where they are going. Still fans of the symphonic black metal, ala EMPEROR, DIMMU BORGIR, LIMBONIC ART may find themselves giving this album a few spins.
