Cool Songs: Black Bones, Venom of the Beast, Roadkill
Montreal, Quebec, Canadas REANIMATOR is a young and vigorous band who has made a name for itself in the local Montreal metal scene by playing high energy thrash metal with a hardcore twist. Although released just recently, Thrashin′ the Neighborhood sounds as if it were released in the mid 80s.
While listening to this album, it brought me back to my days of metal discovery when thrash reigned supreme. One of the first metal bands I really got into was SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. The skate punk/thrash hybrid sensibilities of ST are represented well with audible bass, machine gun vocal firing, and thrashin′ grooves. The opening riff on Roadkill is the song that really resembles Suicidal due to the its groove. Just imagine Sucidals classic tune, Wake the Dead.
As with most of the tracks on the album, the thrash parts breakdown into an old school hardcore rhythm, mostly during the choral parts. The chorus on Roadkill shows the guitarists breaking it down with power chord riffs, while the drummer travels all around his kit filling in the gaps between each stricken chord with furious rolls and violent cymbal crashes. The bass follows the frantic pace of the drummer with fast bass lines. Petrick Le Pirates Vokills solidify the groups hardcore stance with screaming, throaty vocal firings.
Another band REANIMATOR appears to have an affinity for is NUCLEAR ASSAULT. Like the classic 80s thrash group led by ex-ANTHRAX bassist Dan Lilker, ANIMATOR also features some great bass playing courtesy of Maxime Cormier. Maxime leads the charge into pit-inducing, meaty thrash rhythms and instrumental sprints. Venom of the Beast and Black Bones shows Maxime starting the catchy rhythms with punk fused bass lines. Near the end of Black Bones Maxime trades off a solo from one of the guitarist, inserting his own bass solo. That is just something you rarely hear. Impressive!
There are so many cool aspects of Thrashin′ the Neighborhood one could pick out. Another facet of the album that is sure to wow listeners is the excellent, shredding guitar solos. I could go for pages upon pages of how awesome this album is, but Ill leave it to you, the reader, to find out for yourself. If you like crossover bands like S.O.D and NUCLEAR ASSAULT, D.R.I. and more recently, MUNICIPAL WASTE and killer thrash from the genres creative peak like MEGADETH, EXODUS, and KREATOR then pick up a copy of Thrashin′ the Neighborhood and kick your friend in the head and have a ball!
