Cool Songs: Drawn in Fire, Terin'na, Tellus Mater

Hailing from Savoy, France, EVOHE plays grim, black metal that resounds the cruelty of their country’s medieval past. The group, in part, achieves this sanguinary sound due to Ludovic Tournier's superb production. Tournier is renown for his knob twisting in the French black metal scene (he also engineered the TEMPLE OF BAAL album I reviewed before this one.) Tournier perfectly captures the savage sound EVOHE hoped to impress upon its listeners. None of the instruments over power the mix: the drums pound away heavily, the guitar’s fuzzy tones spread through the airwaves like The Black Death, and the vocals are sick and audible.

At first, listeners may come to believe ‘Tellus Mater’ is akin to the type of slow, ambient black metal that groups like XASTHUR and BURZUM are know for. The album’s introduction, which is not included on all copies of this release, is slow and murky with the guitarist utilizing single strings that ring out at the end of each note. The album’s next track and opening song, “Through the Eyes of the Sky” is a blasting black metal affair with guitars that slide up the guitar’s neck and settle into faster picking at the end of the slide. These are the type of riffs The True, MAYHEM perfected.

Most of the album is an emulation of the two legendary Norwegian bands: MAYHEM and BURZUM, yet EVOHE still manages to retain an identity of its own. Part of their identity consists of varying their vocal styles, alternating between death growls and black metal screams. Another facet of the album that seperates the group from MAYHEM and BURZUM is their occasional use of glorified battle rhythms. Their music has been described as containing lyrical themes of paganism. The medieval, ale-swinging rhythms uphold these ideas.

EVOHE isn’t exactly doing anything innovative, but what they do, they do well. Like I said in the review of their co-patriots and label mates, TEMPLE OF BAAL, France features some of the best black metal in the biz. EVOHE is another band of this genre to watch out for.
