HEX is another band from the Basque Country, namely from Bilbao, Spain. The team has been operating since 2012. They released their second album before the coronavirus pandemic, and now they are announcing to the world that they have survived with the release of the three-track EP “Behold the Unlighted”.
HEX presents a totally heavy and crushing Doom Death Metal, but without exaggerated melodies and without softeners such as sweet melodies, clear chants or overly exposed keyboards.
Their compositions are crushing and gloomy, based on slow paces, but with a tendency to crash acceleration. In the structure of the songs you can clearly hear the influences of British Doom Death Metal, such as similarities to the old PARADISE LOST, also to MY DYING BRIDE (of course without strings and clean singings). And with even more massive decelerations, they can be associated with the Dutch from SPINA BIFIDA.
In addition, the influences of Swedish Death Metal in the style of BOLT THROWER or ENTOMBED are also significant, which can be heard in the acceleration and in many structures of guitar riffs.
In turn, monstrous growls definitely dominate here. Although sometimes they turn into a predatory scream or there are screaming phrases (which can be even more associated with Swedish Death Metal), as well as melodeclamations and whispers appear (giving auras of mystery and darkness).
If the keyboards appear, it is only incidental. Mainly as introduce the first piece in style of music classicism. Then maybe some keyboards make very soft backgrounds sometimes.
Another addition is the occasional use of the clean guitars, sometimes in a Flamenco style or even in a post-metal tone.
The album cover was created once again by the band’s founder, guitarist, Adolfo WB.
The album is very dark and powerful sounding, with specific melodies for both genres, i.e. Doom Death Metal and Swedish Death Metal.
