Cool Songs: Possessed, Sanctified by the Blood of Satan
San Antonio, Texas heathens, THORNSPAWN play uncompromising, no keyboards, raw black metal. Although the guitars have been tuned up, they still sound intense and distorted. The guitar sound is reminiscent of ULVERs classic Nattens Madrigal. Drummer Blackthorns vocals (yes, the drummer also does vocals) are loud and gruff, coming across like IMMORTALS Abbath during the Full Moon Mysticism era or NARGAROTHs singer. Just listening to his raw vocals makes me reach for a Halls.
“Sanctified…” features hypnotic, repetitive rhythms that ebb and flow like a rolling lake of fire. During low-end, palm-muted rapid riffs, Blackthorn wails away on his snare, and raises the intensity with cymbal crashes when the rest of the band strikes higher, louder chords. The title track shows Blackthorn meshing tightly with bassist Swornghoul for a moment of destructive bass slams and cymbal bangs.
The interplay between each instrument creates memorable, flowing rhythms, although some rhythms will cause a lingering effect in the listeners brain simply due to excellent riff writing. One of the better riffs occurs during a moment in Possessed (every black metal band should have at least one song with this title). The said track features a warped, sliding, string-bending riff in the tradition of Norwegian black metallers DARKTHRONE.
THORNSPAWN has improved tremendously since I heard their earlier album Blood of the Holy Taint my Steel. The song writing has improved and the bands tightness and musical interplay shows the longer a band plays together, the better they become. With Sanctified by Satan's Blood, THORNSPAWN proves why they are on of the elite bands in the USBM scene.
