Cool Songs: The Conquer Wyrm, Watchtower

Students who paid attention in English class and students of occult history will instantly recall the name Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams is a name associated with a dark past that brings embarrassment and shame to modern Christian believers. Williams was one of the accusatory little girls in the Salem Witchcraft trials of 1692. Arthur Miller revived her name in his classic play “The Crucible” as a warning to the country against the tyrannical blacklisting during American’s red scare years, which made a victim of Miller. Arizona metallers, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS have once again revived this ominous name to create one hell of a blackened, Deathcore album.

Featuring former members of such revered bands as VEHEMENCE and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS is no ordinary Metalcore band. Sure, they have moments of Melodic Death Metal, seeming to sample the same galloping, harsh Thrash that many bands of this genre have done many times before them. The vocals and many of the rhythms sound quite similar to the immortal, AT THE GATES. Even though they play this style quite well with many catchy riffs and blasting drums (listen to the first track “From a Buried Heart” and “The Conquering Wyrm”) it has been done before, too many times.

What separates this band from the rest of the pack is the inclusion of Black Metal and symphonic elements. Saddening piano passages create melodious moments seldom seen in the Deathcore and Metalcore styles. In other places, Ellyllon taps out floating, empyreal passages or subtle, ethereal chiming sections, giving the music a slight supernatural edge. Ellyllon is the perfect candidate for this position, being involved in a dark ambient/neo classical project of the same name.

The first two tracks on “Legend”, “From a Buried Heart” and “Like Carrion Birds” are about half Melodic Deathcore and half Black Metal. The last two tracks are primarily Black Metal. Starting with “Watchtower”, the music slants towards sounding like CRADLE OF FILTH (no arguments over whether C.O.F. is Black Metal or not). This track begins with a dark, imperial keyboard section accompanied with concussion-causing double bass provided by ex-BLACK DAHLIA MURDER drummer, Zach Gibson. The thrashy guitar parts as well as the melodic parts bare a heavy resemblance to C.O.F., as do Ken Sorceron’s vocals.

By obtaining veteran musicians from well-established acts who each threw their own ingredient into the boiling cauldron, ABIGAL WILLIAMS has managed to create one of the first great albums of the year. Through signing with a major Metal label like Candlelight, making its presence known on myspace with nearly 400,000 views, and an upcoming tour with ENSLAVED and DARK FUNERAL, this group is bound to have a break out year in 2007! Look for their album in stories on January 23.
