Godflesh created a huge record last year and it really made it to my top 10 list. The thing about Industrial music is that, it is often mislabelled and quite honestly, it is not made for all. Godflesh might attract many but their sound is often hard to digest that people begin categorising as “noise”. The mislabelling aspect come from the group of people who call Rammstein an Industrial Metal band. Many may accept their citation but Metal with eerie synth is not Industrial. However, for getting the gist of what we call “Industrial” it is important to get down to the pioneering sound itself, as in bare Industrial sound with a little to no presence of Metal.
Before there was Industrial Metal, there was IDM. Industrial Dance Music. I somewhat got into it while I listened and tried out the Combichrist tracks. It was so refreshing to live yet,it is bound to be chaotic. I got mesmerized by the sound and began exploring more of it. Jane in Space, an Industrial Electronic duo was hard not to check out, given their musical citations going from Industrial Electro to Alternative Rock. However, the way how Jane in Space differs from Combichrist is that, Jane in Space’s sound is more inclined to Alt Rock/Industrial Electro hence they are often compared to Nine Inch Nails.
Their album, Gorerunner flaunts a disturbing yet mesmerizing setlist all played in an Alt/IDM fashion. The songs have this chaotic structure within which one get a melodic substructure which when joined together balances the Melody and Agression of the album. Before you give this a band and complain them for being “out-of-tempo”, do realise the fact that Industrial music is not for everyone. If you are heavily encapsulated by the melodious and upbeat Pop songs, don’t bother complaining their songs. It’s bound to sound like that and it should be done as such for people to like (no kidding).
Jane in Space might as well be a popular faction in near future, as their music seems to grow better as time elapses. Before giving this album a shot, I did check their previous albums which lacked a bit of punch. But with this effort, Jane in Space have definitely hit a homerun. Perfect combination of IDM, Rock and Pop(?). Gorerunner is a benchmark for how much the band is about to reach in future. Definitely worth a shot and for those who seem puzzled listening to their music, it’s not for you. Gorerunner will be out on 13th July. Mark your calendars, it will be a crazy a day.
