Cool Songs: Maggots Feed, Worship the Dark, Eternal Pits of Damnation
Thanks to the over saturation of murky-produced SUFFOCATION wannabes who overpopulated the metal festivals of the 90s, it can be hard to get excited when hearing about an unknown American Death Metal band. Grand Rapids, Michigans SADOMASOCHISM is one band that will kill this pre-conceived notion. Although, SADO does not reinvent the wheel with their classic American Death Metal approach, they sure do it well.
Combining the best elements of MORBID ANGEL, CANNIBAL CORPSE, and DEICIDE, this quintet plays catchy, stop-n-start rhythms that will burrow into your brain like the maggots described in Maggots Feed. The said track rolls in with true DEICIDE fashion then bridges to a vicious guitar gallop and cymbal bass. The highlight of this track, though, is the crawling, CANNIBAL CORPSE worshipping chorus of Maggots, maggots, feeeeed . This rhythm squirms and slides forward like the song's herald fly larvae consuming rotten flesh.
The subject matter only gets more putrid and vile with family sing alongs like Baptized in Urine, and Fucking Her Rotting Corpse. Each rhythm is utterly dangerousthe ultimate soundtrack for stabbing or bludgeoning. These rhythms are so damn fun to listen to because of their degree of tightness. Drummer, Jason Kandea follows each his band mates note for note, hitting the highs and the lows in unison. Both guitarists, Ingrid Joplin and Jason Salmer, trade off solos perfectly and without restraint, first ripping you down the middle, then cutting off each ear. Jack Owens and Rob Barrett would be proud to have produced such efficient students.
Gory Death Metal bands this potent are extremely rare, especially at a semi-local level like SADO, which makes it even more disappointing knowing Worship the Dark is the last we will hear from the band. Since releasing this solid effort, the group has disbanded and certain members have formed another band called FLESH FOR THE BEAST. Hopefully, this group will carry on the legacy of brutality started with Worship the Dark.
