Sweden has a potential metal scene and it was the Swedish Death Metal icons who created a powerful punch in the Death metal scene. That is why I always keep searching for newer bands whom I think have potential to create an impact in modern metal scenario. However, it is not easy to predict future but it is easier to analyse and praise good music. That being said I’m gonna kick my swedish metal reviews of this year with the Progressive/Death Metal band Apathy Noir.

Apathy Noir, Swedish metallers started their journey under the name Apathy in the year 2002 and later changed the name to Apathy Noir in late 2016. Fronted by Beyond Grace fame Andy Walmsley, Apathy Noir is spearheaded by the solo musician Viktor. Viktor wrote and released Black Soil early on this year. The album itself had a wonderful artwork(well, I like the artwork) and with a Progressive Death Doom definition, I thought of giving the band a try. With them being my first Swedish Death metal album of 2018, the stakes are high.

Within the first few minutes Apathy Noir just captured my interest with their capability of writing multi-layered tracks which goes from a progressive intro to traditional Death metal growls. Fear not, Apathy Noir is unlike most of the Prog Metal bands who use synthesizer and computerised soundtracks. They write and compose synths backed with an exploding guitar work which perfectly maintain the balance between sweet sounding prog and sourful death metal.

If you want to test their math, grab your headset and play the title song, Black Soil for analysing their flair in writing a perfect track that not only is heavy yet melodic at the same time. Melodic?, How could I forget the track that follows it. The Void which binds us slap you face with a melodic goodness. The track itself opens up with stellar guitar intro which transits slowly to a heavier sound. Trust me, you will love the song.

Apathy Noir is a band that try to sound different from your stereotypical metal band. If only the production was made tighter so that the bass guitar would get to shine more. But that’s just a small mistake from a big 7 track album. I really love the fact that the band is not trying to be “brutal” yet, tries to formulate an ideal equation to balance the sweetness and sourness. Kudos to Apathy Noir for getting that formula right. Definitely a banger.
