Many claim 2017 to be a pretty good year for Death Metal as the scene itself expanded beyond the horizons paving way for newer acts to emerge. However 2018 promises a great year with a lot of comeback releases like the new At the Gates, Belakor(Not confirmed, Hopefully they will release one) and more. Taking a step from the prominent releases, we are having some talented bands making their way up to the stardom. This long list include the Austrain Folk/Death Metal band Alphayn.

Alphayn is unlike most of the Melodic Death metal bands, they try to incorporate melodious folk elements and keeping such textures on a same level to the angst filled rifffage, so as to pack a hard yet melodic punch. If words are making you hard to imagine their entire sound, then take a listen to “Durst”, the third track off this album. The intro packs a hard punch yet it is shadowed by sweet sounding folkish elements. Guitar passages are exquisite as they play well along with the folkish elements.

For vocals, you get your typical death metal growl which in my opinion is a bit tuned down in terms of aggression. This clearly matches their Instrumentation well. The songs are well constructed in terms of order as one won’t have a tedious time over the 12 tracks which wraps up almost an hour. You have a lot going into these 12 tracks. Almost every song has something, whether it be the folkish hue or the guitar passage.

As far as I’m concerned, Alphayn did impress me with a well crafted sophomore effort, Wanderschaft. You have everything from angst filled “Totenmarsch” to the totally opposite “Der Neue Mesch”. If you are a fan of Amon Amarth you will totally dig it and, if you don’t like Amon Amarth, you will definitely dig their music.
