The band DARK AGE was formed in 1994 under the name DYER'S EVE. Since then they've released 6 full-lengths and even one DVD. A year ago after the release of “Minus Exitus,” marked as the album of the month by Metalhammer magazine, the band left Remedy Records and started a new era by AFM Records, and I was curious what this change will bring in.

With “Acedia” DARK AGE finally found their truly own style. It's perfectly shown already in the very first track “Kingdom Nevercome,” which is also the first single of the album and an ideal attention-catcher. DARK AGE no longer need to refer to IN FLAMES or SOILWORK – they created an own and characterful mix of melodic death metal and electronic music that one won't confound. DARK AGE's music is rather simple and intelligible. A harsh varying verse shifts into a frequently repeated melodic chorus, and so on. This isn't very original, but still there is something unheard-of and new.
The crystal-clear production and a common presence of electronic elements make for the fact that the album sounds, compared with other rather rough melodic death metal bands, quite soft and smooth, but this doesn't take from the brutality of the guitars at all, more to the contrary. The absolute highlight in this respect are the songs “10 Steps to Nausea” and “All the Unfulfilled.” The song that surpasses a bit is then the industrial/electronic “Zeitgeist (Ghost in a Machine),” that was a pleasant surprise for me and maybe could reveal something about the future of the band, thus appealing to fans of bands like FEAR FACTORY or MINISTRY.

“Acedia” is definitely the best newcomer I've heard in the last few moths and I recommend it to everyone, especially to those tired of too complicated music, who need something pleasing, yet interesting to relax with.
