I would have to say that when I first started listening to Metal, KING DIAMOND had to be one of my favorites.This was due to the fact that he tells awesome scary stories that are backed with excellent music.
His style is defiantly one of a kind.Though some think he is annoying, I have always enjoyed listening to him. Now time for the latest release review.
One thing that has always stood out when listening to KING DIAMOND beside the stories is the fact that he surrounds himself with unbelievably gifted musicians. I don’t think anyone can deny that fact. The musician on The Puppet Master are no exception. The guitar work is just down right amazing. Driving, Melodic, and just full of great riffs throughout. The solo’s fit the songs like a tight glove. All following the somewhat unnoticeable low end Bass. I try to train my ear to listen to all instrument in the bands I review and sometimes I find it the hardest to hear the Bass work. I was at times able to hear the Bass on this release. Nothing stood out such as fills or anything fancy. Just your normal pace-setting Bass is what I heard.
The Drumming is really good. There is some double bass here and there, but is not overdone. King Diamond and Andy De Rocque providesome exceptionally fitting keyboards during “The Puppet Master”. Eerie at timewould be a fitting describtion of the Keyboards.
If you throw this Disc in and push play without reading the lyrics, you have no idea what you are missing. I would have to that this latest release has to be the darkest and most gruesome ever written by King.
One song in particular that through me off guard was the song entitled “Christmas” The beginning through me off guard with its “Little Drummer Boy” intro, only to be blown away by the stellar lyrical delivery by King afterwards. What a great song to be blasting through your speakers while enjoying the holiday season.
Having owned practically the whole King Diamond catalogue on cassette. I would have to say that this is by far his greatest release to date.
An all around stellar release from one of Metals true icons.
