The Belgian NETHER is not to be confused with the bands of the same name from Croatia and Denmark. This NETHER in was established in 2019 in the town of Limbourg. Its members previously worked for many years in the groups SIGNS OF DARKNESS, NECROSIS and INSANITY REIGNS SUPREME, which perform various types of non-commercial Metal.
The logo of the Limburgish quartet was designed by the tireless graphic artist Christophe Szpajdel.
The content of “Between Shades & Shadows” – the band’s absolute debut – is primarily aggressive, fast, melodic Black Metal. At the same time, the speed of playing, which is high in a given piece from the beginning, then oftengradually increases, without losing its melody at the same time. The first five tracks can be classified as “Modern Black Metal”, coinciding with the Art Gates Records publishing line, while the last three tracks, with the guitar playing and melodies, strongly refer to the classics of Black Metal.
The distinguishing musician in the band is the drummer. He shows great efficiency and richness of playing, passion. The guitarists professionally pull the strings. The guitar solos on this album are practically non-existent. Sometimes the play is very dense, without losing readability. The vocalist sings roughly and scream with great commitment.
These forty minutes of brutality are not boring thanks to the variety: atmospheric intros, short decelerations and stops, heavy fragments referring to BLACK SABBATH – single drum hits at the beginning of “So All Adore Me” are straightforwardly taken from BLACK SABBATH classic song – “Iron Man”. There are also moments of peace, sadness, and despair.
The NETHER music, although it is Black Metal, has light in it. And also own style, individuality. The work of the Belgian quartet is well-thought-out, even calculated, becayse the musicians do not let go of their madness.
We are dealing with an uncompromising Metal, but with lightness and freedom of realization. It is not a thing for everyone, but it is worth opening up to NETHER’s music.
