Hard rock acts were more like “Heavy” metal bands for me when I was younger. They were the gateway bands and they got me where I’m right now. It is not all easy for someone to get the sound of Burzum or Mayhem on their first listen. They will feel lonely irritated and would have the tendency to stop the music before it damages their ears. That’s why I believe Rock has a huge connection to Metal on connecting the dots and transiting the passage. One among the newer bands to facilitate the transit for newer people is Cordova. A “Heavy” Hard rock band whose sound resembles the good old GnR and other Rock bands as such, released their 2018 EP Runaway Summer is a 4 track album which shows the pulverizing sound of Cordova.

The four track EP is always a hard one to review. Given the short amount of running time and select few tracks, an artist should give enormous attention to every single and little detail so as to make the audience digest their tracks. I expected the same from Cordova. However personally, I had a 50-50 love for the album. The opening track had this beautiful and catchy riff yet for some reason I couldn’t find the vocals perfect to go with it. On the title track, Runaway Summer, vocals are perfectly laid especially, on the chorus yet for some reason the instrumentation sounds pretty obvious and predictable.

If there is one flaw on a song there is a strong positive factor as well. I pretty much expected for something inspired by GnR and similar hard rock bands but never did I thought something like them. There is a little to no originality on the album. It’s pretty much your average hard rock album worth jamming out to. There is nothing unique on it yet, pretty much a great album to have fun with. The catchy riff will surely hook you up to their music but watch out for some similar riffs. There is nothing wrong on reproducing or rewriting something, so I really do recommend this album and overall Runaway Summer is a perfect EP to mourn your summer holidays
