The Swedish band has been around 16 years and this is already their fourth album, and this is only my first encounter with the music of IN MOURNING thanks to the courtesy of Polish label Agonia Records…

The heavy and aggressive playing with the slow rhythms and a climat enjoyed me from a long time. Exactly IN MOURNING has these attributes… The powerful, predatory phrases, the aggressive background and the dark emotions shrouded in an aura of melancholy create a very crushing material, in which the aggressive guitars and hysterical growls dominate here but these features sometimes give way to melancholy parties of singings and delicate passages of clean guitars. The climatic Post-Rock melodies intertwined with the powerful sounds of Doom Death Metal and the rapacity of Black Metal.

The material is very emotional and spatial. The motifs interlacing of melancholic and calm themes with the crushing playing associated me with the legendary Swedish Death Metal – EDGE OF SANITY, where Dan Swanö gave vent to both the monstrous beast and the gentle singings in his vocals. Similarly is in IN MOURNING, but this band is more Doom and EDGE OF SANITY is more Death. In addition, IN MOURNING (besides slow and medium-slow tempos) can also accelerate sharply or can an interesting break rhythms, introducing a breath of progression to the whole.

The album is truly unique. It combines the features of Doom Death Metal of 90’s in style of the beginnings of ANATHEMA and PARADISE LOST with the contemporary trends, which are used for Post Rock or Post Metal.

Although the year is not over yet, for me, this is the album of the year!
