Despised by dyslexics and spell-checkers everywhere; English country lads Dokkalfur, Ljosalfur, Vordhr and Mjolnir (known to their mums as Rob, Luke, Matt and Josh) have wasted no time in planting their feet firmly in the black metal scene as PRIMITIVE GRAVEN IMAGE. They've showed how a band born from humble beginnings can go on to play on the same bill as AMON AMARTH and then to grace the prestigious stage of British metalfest Bloodstock. All this with two albums under their belts as well – not too shabby at all.

There's not even time to sit down and make yourself comfortable before PRIMITIVE GRAVEN IMAGE launch their aural assault of “Celebrating Impending Chaos” with opening track “Into The Godless Chambers”. The creepy, ascending guitar riff and steady pounding of the bass drum demonstrate the strong black metal influences acutely evident throughout the album (in case the corpse paint wasn't a big enough clue), while at other times there's a definite taste of some good old-fashioned thrash (see “March Onward/Celebrating Impending Chaos”) and of course the token atmospheric guitar solo in the closing track “A Gruesome Relic of Death and Decay”. Then all of a sudden, they'll come out with something terribly catchy. “WAR! TIL DEATH!” is a rousing chant enough to get any moshpit riled up, making it stand-out track, if only for that unforgettable refrain.

PRIMITIVE GRAVEN IMAGE must be applauded for apparently refusing to join the ranks of arrogant black metal elitists, who are ceaseless in their quest to expose the “untr00”. Instead this is a band who are unafraid to subtly fuse genres and combine dark, traditional black metal themes with surprisingly decipherable vocals and well-written, memorable riffs – so they most certainly don't want to hide any of that under poor quality, tin can production as many of their colleagues do. Heavy yet melodic and tumultuous yet very listenable, ”Celebrating Impending Chaos” is fun for all the family.
