Dark Funeral spare no filler when it comes to getting the party started. At the crack of the drums “The End Of The Human Race” gets underway and gosh, it’s pretty pestilential. A hornet’s nest of rapidfire percussion buzzes from your speakers as Emperor Caligula, arguably one of the finest vocalists to ever preach the black metal gospel, proceeds on his diabolical diatribe that supposedly eradicates all life from earth. Once the song flits by in minutes, the quintet are at it again with brute force for “The Birth Of the Vampyr” before spicing their aural dish using thick riffs and a smidgen of (gasp!) melody on “Stigmata.” The two hit combo of “My Funeral” and the title track prove a gruesome twosome, the former a creepy anthem creaking under the weight of the churning guitars, the latter an all out barrage that seeks to batter down Christianity’s last remnants.

Much to the listener’s dismay, the album hits a tedious stretch on the ensuing numbers past the staid “Demons Of Fire” and the pace doesn’t redeem itself until “In My Dreams” gets the venom burning once more. Closer “My Latex Queen” doesn’t exactly do the band justice, but for an almost 20 year old black metal unit, Dark Funeral remain a refreshing listen. No other batch of gladiators in the extreme metal league epitomize the Christ-hating aesthete better than these Swedes. Forgiving the b-movie cover art (basically a mug shot of Satan surveying a decimated landscape), the production is hairy—a certain Jonas Kjellgren of Scar Symmetry did the superficial mixing here—and the band are in fine form throughout, be it Emperor Caligula’s tortured wails, Lord Ahriman’s six string meat grinder, or Dominator’s percussion frenzy. “Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus” may not be the second coming of the Anti-Christ, but it sure burns like syphilis.
