Cool Songs: The Tide And Its Takers, Vast & Vague, We Gave It Hell

Metalcore innovators 36 CRAZYFISTS are back with their fourth studio album “The Tide And Its Takers.” This easily recognizable pack from wild Alaska has ended its era with Roadrunner Records and signed a deal with Ferret Music. 36 CRAZYFISTS make their music with obvious enthusiasm and a little bit of exaggeration, which is clearly visible also in choosing their name from a Jackie Chan movie.

For their new record they cooperated with Andy Sneap, a producer responsible for success of bands like TESTAMENT or NEVERMORE, which surely was a smart move for the band. “The Tide And Its Takers” is evidently more mature and also more melodic than its predecessor. Brock Lindow is an amazing singer, his super-sonorous voice is climbing into even more unbelievable extremes, whether it's in clear or in rough positions. Despite its progressiveness the album remains full of catchy riffs and choruses, for example in “We Gave It Hell” or “Northern November,” that are about to become number one hit songs. The absolute top of the album is for me the song “Vast & Vague,” extremely dynamic, which is only boosted by very interesting drum parts. In addition, Candace Kucsulain from WALLS OF JERICHO made a guest appearance on this song, thus adding a new dimension to it. One of my favorites is also the last track “The Tide And Its Takers,” beginning with very decent acoustic intro, which is followed by a passionate hardcore blast, until it finally slowly fades away, leaving us thoughtful, yet optimistic.

The album is definitely a step forward for 36 CRAZYFISTS, yet to my mind it's a bit unbalanced and contains too much filling material. Nevertheless it's really worth listening and I recommend it, maybe just because it brings a bit of variety to crowded and lingering metalcore scene.
