Cool Songs: “Road of the cross”, “World gone mad”, “I walk alone”
Many people complain about Jorn's likeness to Dio, but to my mind, any damn good Rock singer should learn from the school of Ronnie James Dio. Perhaps the problem here is that this Norseman doesn't add any new stuff. In “Spirit Black”, for example, Jorn has decided to stay in his 80's core, repeating himself and repeating other ones (just as happens with Yngwie Malmsteen), but come on, the man has talent and everything he sings is high quality singing,
What some metalheads usually forget is that this guy is more Hard Rock-oriented, therefore it will never be Heavy enough if you're looking for a killer soloing at any time. As far as I know that was the reason why he left Masterplan for a while. So then, in the new album, recorded at Jailhouse Studios, Denmark, we have “The Last Revolution” and “Rock N Roll Angel” as good examples of it; it's all about slow sticky melodic riffing and lots of uuuhhs, aaaahhhs, ooohhhs, but the best of its kind, for sure.
In “Burn your flame” we can find this old-fashioned 80's intro, which was cool then, 25 years ago. “City in between” may be just too much melodic, for certain, to many ears, one of those anthems that tend to cloy with those choruses and synth-lasers spread all around. As I said before, it would be perfect for hard rockers to listen to this album and the whole Jorn's discography, but not too much for trashers.
A place apart is the cover “I walk alone”, quite a surprise since it has nothing to do with Hard Rock at all. This original song by Tarja Turunen gets a new personality when sung by Jorn, who really made an effort to preserve the song avoiding the risk of destroying it. Even those fans of Tarja will admit the success of this version. It made me remember the ABBA songs covered by At Vance, a pretty good German band, which usually turns sickly sweet, by the way.
