Cool songs: I See… No More, This Is The Way
KAOS ENGINE is an Italian band, formed in 2001 and playing an extreme mix of thrash and death. That looks like a slight change, because the most popular metal genre in Italy is
Power Metal. Once in a while the Italians are trying to change this image and create a band playing harder, probably to outnumber the death metal colossi, which are the Scandinavians.
This demo starts rather poetic, with nice grim intro. Later on it is pure thrash with audible death elements. Especially the vocal line is quite hoarse and creates that death climate. The riffs are pure thrash, very raw and heavy, the guitar solos stay in the memory, because they are more melodic and show, that Jena and Glacial know a lot about the world of sounds. This operation (melodic solos) are in some contrast to the rest, thus they enrich the whole and make it more attention drawing. The last sounds of I See No More definitely change the climate. The whole composition is very heavy and aggressive, but that poetic finish fits here like a glove, and upgrades this track to a higher dimension. What is more, the music is of high quality, the musicians are paying attention to technical details. So it sounds really good. This Is The Way is a good example of their craft. The cooperation between the instruments is absolutely fabulous, the guitars can be a background suddenly they are the main scene. And the solos are a perfect complement to the whole. What can annoy is the dullness of drums. They are predictable and the motif is actually not changing at all. But the rest is so good, that those percussion hoaxes do not spoil the whole.
Hymn To Death really gives a kick. This is what thrash maniacs like the most. The album is quite varied: from extreme rawness of sound and heaviness of guitars, to melodic solos and powerful speed. A good choice for everyone who likes such heavy play.
