For a band appropriately tagged “East Coast Thrash,” the hardcore style must be brought up, considering the impact New York City Hardcore has on the thrash scene from the same area. Loyal followers of ‘80s thrash already know the legacy three of the band members have on the thrash scene. Dave Linsk, Tim Mallare and Derek Tailer all play in one of the East Coast’s most influencial thrash bands, OVERKILL. “Act of Insanity” is filled with classic OVERKILL grooves, which is sure to please any fan of the legendary band.

Although “Acts” features elements of OVERKILL, it has a velocity never before seen in the band. Speed is apparent right from the first riff. “Walls of Hate” doesn’t ease the listener in slowly; the first note is a furious speed lick in the vein of SLAYER’s “Angel of Death.” “R.A.W. Revelation of War” has a chugging, meaty speed riff that Frasca and Linsk someone follow in old school hardcore fashion during the chorus. The way this group unifies the best parts of East Coast hardcore and thrash is what makes this album special.

If there is one aspect of negativity on “Act of Insanity” it is Mario Fasca’s vocals. His vocals add aggression and he has a knack for shooting out fast, hardcore vocals, but comes across sounding horse. During certain moments, like the vocal slow down during “Walls of Hate,” he sounds like Phil Anselmo during his days with PANTERA. Fasca does not have the vocal power made legendary by Anselmo, though.

The infectious grooves, blarry speed, and aggression make “Acts of Insanity” a good enough listen to over look the mediocre vocals. By mixing legendary East Coast thrash like ANTRAX, NUCLEAR ASSAULT and obviously OVERKILL with crossover bands like S.O.D. and D.R.I., SPEED KILL HATE is worthy of wearing the label “East Coast Thrash!”
