Cool Songs: Battles In The Twilight, Shores Of My Land, The Curse Of Every Man

The power metal scene is so big that everyone can find something interesting. People gather in one place, record an album, and, all of a sudden, become famous. The country having the biggest representation in this particular field is Italy. Power Symphony is a good example of this phenomenon. “Evillot” is their first album. So, let us go into details. This album generally is a not bad piece of work. There are six songs, representing many styles, which are practiced by the band (as they say). Including: power, epic, melodic, and finally gothic. So, the field is really big. The album is rather short. “Battles In The Twilight” opens the track list. And from the first tune, the music will stay in your head forever. The guitars are magnificent, rather blackish than power, but that’s ok. Cecconi shows his craftsmanship. And the drums- very vivid and furious, especially in this song.Sometimes I had the impression that those are not the real drums… But in any case, worth to listen. And the way in which Michela sings the song, not only this one, every song, is very heavy! One of the greatest female-heavy metal voice I have ever heard. The song ends in a very calm and pleasant way. Nice ending, for such a powerful song. The next on, entitled “Shores Of My Land” is some sort of a battle hymn. Also fast and furious, but when it comes to the chorus, the melody changes, actually, the mood of the song changes. It becomes very melancholic. And it is very, very slow and sounds sad. Probably warriors, who would have listened to it, would have had no vision of a victory, or even the next day. The song makes you feel the atmosphere of call to arms. And the last words of the song are… listen and find out. Number four on the track list is the title song, “Evillot”. It starts very heavily and grim. Creates the atmosphere of darkness and fear. And that’s… all. Nothing more. The song is actually boring. First of all it is too long and there are too many repetitions. Music, rhythm… after a while it really can get on your nerves. One could expect more from the title song. But the next one is the best track on this album. “The Curse Of Every Man” is a thrilling composition. It makes you aware from the beginning. Firs the guitar, slowly, then, drums… developing into a speed demon. And the fatal moment – the solo! The fragment of “It’s a sin” by Pet Shop Boys, is the best thing for a solo, in this case. It fits exactly the main “plot”. “Inferno Suite” is another “melodic-something”, but nothing new. Millions of metal songs sound similar to that one. The last one – “I am The Bard” is not a metal song actually. This is the ending of the “Battles In The Twilight” turned into a separate track, and played at the very end. It is a nice ending of the whole, but it makes me wonder… that Michela and the guys did not actually have the idea how to close the C, so the copied the theme from the first song. Some may say that this is a normal thing. And it is, although it leaves an impression, that the band do not care about the public, because of selling to it such a cheap trick.

The final mark is 7, because I think that this is rather a good album. And for a debut, it is a nice one. It has an atmosphere which stays with the listener throughout the listening. The weakest part is the ending. But what more can one want? After all there are so many metal bands, that it is really hard to think of something new… something unique.
