“Death Shall Purify the Wounds of Your Fragile Mortality” is a compilation album with tracks culled throughout the career of the Greek black metal group, DODSFERD. The term “group” is used loosely as DODSFERD consists primarily as the creation of one man, Wrath, along with session members. Wrath released the compilation through his own Fucking Your Creation Records.

DODSFERD doesn’t sound like the usual Greek black metal comprised of epic compositions and Greek folk music. As one will hear with the seven tracks within, DODSFERD leans towards the DSBM style, although other albums reveal a crusty punk influence, as heard on “The Parasitic Survival of the Human Race.” Wrath’s songs work on medium to slow paces with churning, strumming chords of a depressive nature. He often produces a high-pitch, tortured cries. These tracks are full of pain and sorrow. Also keeping with the DSBM sound, his songs are long. “Suicide And The Rest Of Your Kind Will Follow” has a running time of over 20 minutes. The album contains just seven songs and clocks in at close to an hour and a half.

The album has quality songs throughout, but “Suicide And The Rest Of Your Kind Will Follow, ” taken from the album of the same name, is a personal favorite. For all the song’s harshness, it exudes harmony. The track consists of a just a couple of chords that repeat to create a trance-like quality, but there are plenty of nuanced changes, particularly in the melodic leads. Suicide and misanthropy are two reoccurring lyrical themes of DODSFERD, which this seems to address.

“His Veins Colored The Room,” the following track, was taken from the same album. It also seems to be a song about suicide. This track contains a lot of ringing chords, from the doom-filled beginning to the open-string chiming that follows. Being one of only two songs from the “Suicide And The Rest of Your Kind Will Follow,” it is also a long song with a running time of over 16 minutes. Besides having a doomy quality, the opening passage is also quite experimental with strange guitar sounds. The opening part picks back up somewhere near the middle of the track with additional guitar sounds.

“Staring At The Forthcoming Chaos,” a re-recorded version from the “Wastes of Life” vinyl, brings the album in with tranquil, transcendental with rhythms that define the overall gloomy feel of the album. “Death Has Always Been the God of Man” from “The Great Depression I” split has an ambient quality in the strings. “Millions Deaths Inside,” taken from the same recording, has a similar “great” depressive quality. “Deterioration” is a newly recorded track. Brooding bass lines, waves of keyboard-generated atmosphere, rattling percussion, Greek-language narrations and screeching guitar noises make this track the creepiest song on the compilation. Watch the video below to see the song come to life through demented imagery.

“Death Shall Purify The Wounds Of Your Fragile Mortality” is a short-but-good representation of the near-20 years of DODSFERD. It contains some of Wrath’s best material. It should serve as a good starting point for newcomers to the band. “Death Shall Purify The Wounds of Your Fragile Mortality” showcases one of the most unique black metal bands in Greece and one of the better bands playing the DSBM style today.
