A Finnish-sung album delivering that great dramatic doomed metal that Finns have already turned into a trademark of their traditional music. Then, it's natural to expect some kind of master piece if coming from Finland, at least in this kind of genre.
SAATTUE (meaning procession in Finnish) started in 2001. They released their first self-financed EP “Kivisydän” in 2004 and it's follow up EP release “Ikiuneen” in 2006. In 2007 SAATUE got signed to Spikefarm Records, who has been responsible for producing SAATTUE s full-length album releases: “Jäähyvästi” (January 2008) and “Vuoroveri” (October 2009).
As happened on “Jäähyvästi”, “Vuoroveri” (Tide of blood) was the result of refined recording and production sessions hosted by Jarno Hänninen at D-Studio, and mastered at Finnvox Studio by Mika Jussila. SAATTUE plays again a lot of oppressive heavy rawness, with atmospheric passages and ear-catching chorus laments and melodies.
Among other similar bands we could mention SHAPE OF DESPAIR and YEARNING from Finland (though lyrics are in English), and of course those who SAATTUE regard as inspiration, the Doom Trinity: PARADISE LOST, MY DYING BRIDE and ANATHEMA. To me, Finnish lyrics open the paths of a new dimension, a real expression of their personality, a style that I have only found in some way in VERJNUARMU.
VERJNUARMU call their music Savo Metal, while SAATTUE call their music Saatto Metal. I don't know exactly what is that, I just feel beautifully depressed with this Finnish screams, slow riffs and melancholic acoustic guitar and piano. Even if we never understand a word, they must keep on doing it just as real as it is. The coldest, deepest bleeding.
