Cool Songs: Feast of Flesh, Cannibal Cook-Out, Hammer To The Skull, The Saw Is Family

The aptly named “Feast of Flesh” features ten stories of human cannibalism regurgitated by death metal scene veteran Kam Lee (ex-DEATH/MANTAS, MASSACRE). As one would expect, each one of these tales of necrophagia are animated through the sounds of old school Florida death metal, which should be expected considering Kam Lee was one of the pioneers of this sound, but his cast of Swedish musicians lends their music a gristly marbling of Stockholm death metal.

Various parts of “Flesh Feast” will take gore grinders and death heads back to death metal’s golden days. “Cannibal Cook-Out” and “Make You Die Slow” feature guitar work harkening back to DEATH’s formative years. The guitar string bending techniques of “Hammer To the Skull” bring to mind CANNIBAL CORPSE (as does the song title). “Defleshed and Skinned” and “Anthropophagus Beast” move with the type of fat grooves that animate OBITUARY and SIX FEET UNDER.

Still, other segments such as the brutal, stab-like motion of “Sliced & Diced” are reminiscent of Swedish titans GRAVE and ENTOMBED. Additionally, the mix and mastering has a distinct Swedish DM flavor, ala Abyss Studios, due to guitarist Ronnie Bjornstrom’s mix and master job done at Enhanced Audio Productions in….you guess it—Sweden.

Kam Lee’s brutish growls relive the horrors of famous cannibals such as Ed Gein (“Defleshed and Skinned”) and Leatherface of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” fame (“Feast of Flesh” and “The Saw is Family”), both feature choice sound cuts from the legendary horror film and its sequels. Lee receives a hand…or eh, bloody stump from a cast of respected DM veterans that includes Killjoy (NECROPHAGIA), Stevo Do Caixao (IMPETIGO) and Dopi (MACHETAZO). The choirs of terrifying shrieks achieved by this cast of deviants draws yet another comparison, AUTOPSY.

“Feast of Flesh” may bring about many comparisons to the best of death metal’s roots, which is fine because Kam Lee was instrumental in forming this sound. DEATH and its wretched spawn (SIX FEET UNDER, OBITUARY, AUTOPSY) were groups Lee or his band mates were involved with in one way or another, so it comes as no surprise that this album would sound such a way. These groups all comprise the ingredients of an award-winning chili, things we’ve all tasted, but the final product is nothing less than tasty prime beef!
