If you ever find yourself traveling to another dimension at warp speed and your destination remains a terrifying unknown, then Cosmic Atrophy’s “Codex Incubo” is the soundtrack you bring along for the ride. Rather short at seven brooding songs, this brainchild between guitarists Corey Richards and Juan Garcia is an impressive feat from two budding artists armed with nothing but guitars, programmed drums, and enough studio know how to pull off a decent indie release.

Cosmic Atrophy belongs to a twisted branch of the Death Metal family tree and only true aficionados of the genre can properly name their influences. But you don’t need the pedigree to enjoy the material at hand. Blessed with melody but packing a grim atmosphere that fires one’s imagination concerning all matters galactic and astounding, from openers “Prelude to Phantasmagoria” to the grooving “Cydonic Adulation,” the Atrophy boys bathe your ears in menacing weirdness.

The vocals are equally far fetched, sounding like a cross between the Nile guy and Unicron from the Transformers animated movie (circa 1987). Quite ironic since the latter’s God-sized villainy suits the nameless evil lurking inside this musical codex.

Not just a prolonged burst of drums and buzzing riffs, the two lads behind Cosmic Atrophy utilize their guitar skills to provide the songs with alien ambience. Skillful leads and solos abound on such tracks as “The Granfalloon,” “Consumed From Within the X-Zone,” and “Doomed By The Cancer Dormus.” While these guys almost turn their genre in over its head, they also put an emphasis on gloom and slow tempos to reinforce the fantastical aspects of their music.

A highly imaginative, if obscure album, the word is already out that Cosmic Atrophy will be releasing their sophomore effort soon. If you find “Codex Incubo” a curious, refreshing, surprising listen then it should be the perfect appetizer for their upcoming entrée.
