Cool Songs: Mutilation (Death cover), Conflict Inside, Liar’s Resurrection

Lost in a mire of blood and gore hacked by VADER, DECAPITATED, YATTERING and other major names in the Polish death metal scene, MUTILATION is a name bandied about by only the most hardcore death metal fans. It is a shame, too, because the death metal this group creates is of the deadliest strand.

MUTILATION doesn’t adhere to conventions of modern, technical death and grind, they create death metal in the traditional since, recalling such vaunted acts as GRAVE, BOLT THROWER, MORBID ANGEL, MORGOTH, and a slight VADER influence. The dry-throated vocal emanations remind of the now-defunct Peaceville act, BAPHOMET.

Grinding, mid paced riffs and rolling double bass beats define their most recent outing, “Conflict Inside.” Nope, this isn’t the most technical album or the most inventive, but it is catchy and heavy. The speed never approaches supersonic levels like many of the grind and death bands of today, but the riffs are meaty and accessible. In addition to offering memorable riffs, the group relies on arrangements, which build each song’s level of intensity and make the faster parts appear even faster.

They also include an occasional sample like the war movie clip on “Rise for Victory,” which sets up the song’s opening, rapid drum fill, in turn leading into a churning guitar rhythm or the helicopter and metallic, cranking noise found on the album’s intro. “Damned Mortality” opens with a short whammy bar solo and truncated, chunky riffing. The guitar stays at a mid-pace, grinding along, but thunderous bass drum beats cut in to intensify the song.

Tamek and Kamil’s guitar playing compliments each other, using quick, eerie string-bending solos and whammy bar to layer the churning rhythm, as evidenced in the MORGOTH meets OBITUARY riffing on “Revolt in Myself.” They top it all off with a raw cover of Death’s “Mutilation” from “Scream Bloody Gore.” In DEICIDE fashion, the group alternates low death grumbles with higher-pitched shrieks. Great cover!

Since the Tampa, Florida invasion of death metal, thousands of death metal bands and death metal scenes have popped up all over the world. Because there are so many bands, bands like MUTILATION get left behind. Nothing bad can come of no-talent bands eluding success, but it is a shame that great acts like MUTILATION hide in the shadow of bigger label bands. With the internet, though, we can seek out killer albums like “Conflict Inside,” and over time make a decision on what to pick up based on past label offerings, and one could make the assertion that Adiopocere consistently puts out quality, extreme metal. This one is for the old school death metal fans.
