CHAIN COLLECTOR is a band spewed from the bowels of CARPATHIAN FOREST and GREEN CARNATION. Although the latter are fairly well-known, CHAIN COLLECTOR came together back in early 2004 and offered up “Forthcoming Addiction” as a four song demo. They have since released 2005's “The Masquerade” through Massacre/Sound Riot Records.
Now, on a few of these tracks you can see major influences were taken from both CAPTHIAN FOREST and GREEN CARNATION. As a natural progression of each member, this shift did not surprise me in the least. However, portions of these tracks threw me off quite a bit. The (almost) Layne Staley / Sully Erna vocal pattern on the “Wicked Mask” really threw me for a loop; as did the slower, more melodic parts of “Crucifixion”. The guitars were seemingly in and out, tempo was up and down constantly, and there just didn't seem to be enough to keep me focused on that track.
CHAIN COLLECTOR did a great job with “Winter Princess” and “Fallen Angel” which earned them the score I gave them. Even though this surely is not your cookie-cutter melodic death metal, it still has a distinct sound which will immediately set CHAIN COLLECTOR apart in melodic metal. “Forthcoming Addiction” has some definite headbanging moments especially on the closer “Fallen Angel” which is the fastest track on the album. The riffing on this demo is above average but nothing spectacular. The vocals are hit or miss but I think the rhythm section might be the most well-orchestrated portion of “Forthcoming Addiction”.
All in all, if you are looking to try something a little bit different, check out CHAIN COLLECTOR. It might help if you were well versed in the sounds of CARPATHIAN FOREST and GREEN CARNATION as well, although it is not entirely necessary.
