When a metal band chooses to use a female singer, this band has automatically made the vocals stand apart from the rest of the music. The front woman must have an exceptional voice or it will not work. MERCURY RAIN chose wisely with the inclusion of Sonia Porzier on vocals. Porzier’s vocals fall between ex-NIGHTWISH member, Tarja and LACUNA COIL’s Christina. Porzier’s vocals are deep, seductive during the quieter moments, passionate, and captivating when the music swells. One key point that some may feel appealing is her use of restraint; she does not over do her vocal range, which can come across cheesy.

Even though Sonia is the focal point of the band, the rest of the members do well in highlighting her vocal talents with enchanting keyboards that follow polished, memorable power chords rhythms. “The Messenger” is an up-tempo opus that shows a feminine and male side with male and female vocals, used in the same way as LACUNA COIL.

The keyboard sections are of note. Just like the “M” that forms a crown in the band’s logo, the keyboards convey well the majestic feeling of the band's music. “Sanctuary,” is a prime example of the band conveying this kingly sound. This track begins with temple choirs resembling the work THERION releases. The heaviest track has to be “Sortillegas.” The said track begins with movie score worthy keyboards and beautiful vocals bereft of any other instrument. When the metal ensemble cuts in, though, the music is that much heavier by the lull in action. A chugging, thick rhythm leads the way for the group’s darkest hour.

MERCURY RAIN is a lesser-known group of the Operatic, Gothic Power metal realm. They released only three albums and a DVD, all without label help. Currently the band has broken up, which is a shame because “St. Matthieu” is as good as any popular album from bands of this style.
