Cool Songs: A Life Less Lived, Solitary Refinement, Dismantling Devotion

A lot of hard work has been made to make such a great album…..I'm sure of that. I haven't heard any other album before for this band, but I guess “Dismantling Devotion” is considered a masterpiece for this band and for us (fans).

This album kept me staring at the computer screen, form the first track till the last one. I got stunned by the great sense of music and playing this band has.

One of the most thing I felt for this band was their sense of presence. Their music, and playing supports them very well.

Their vocal is one great guy. His growls/grunts are so powerful. Every song on this album was a witness for that.

Their songs could be good vocal lessons for me.

Concern their playing and style are the first things that got my attention from the first track till the last one. I can't believe that finally I found another right “modern” guitarist who can satisfy my ear, after my most favorite guitarist ever (Alex Skolnick). Despite their songs got space for fast guitar playing, the guitarist didn't play fast. He proved my point, that to be an amazing guitarist not “only” by speed but by how to transform your feelings into strings…and that's what he did. But he knows when to speed up in parts of most of the tracks. He got me paused every time he plays solo. How I loved the merging of the acoustic with the electric guitars! This is an unique sense….it's like merging the quietness of night and the movement of the day, and according to that, you move along with it. Great!

I have to thank that bassist for being, not only great bassist, but also great clean vocal. The multitalented guys always get my attention, and he managed to do that.

The drummer is not to be forgotten. Only few drummers I do like their playing along with their instrument. Most of the time, both things can't be easily found, but that guy gather the 2 things. He is just great.

“A Life Less Lived” was the opening song. I love the recording/song arranging intelligence concerning the first track of the album. This song was the right choice. It was -also- the first song to stun me. I played the song and went to get myself something, but as soon as I heard the first part, I came back to my seat.

The beginning of the “Solitary Refinement” gives you the impression of the doom sub-genre, “funeral doom”. It sounds dark a bit, but later, the tone changed bit by bit. But remained on the same path. Did I say I should thank that bassist? If it's true that he sing the clean vocal, then this song sang “ONLY” by him. It was a very right choice to put him up on this song. His sad quite, may be angelic voice suited the mood and the tone of this song.

“Dismantling Devotion” deserves to be the name of the album. It was just an “Instrumental Funeral” song. if it wasn't so, I guess the bassist will be showing up for the second time. The more prefect thing about this song, the way it ended. It left me still staring to where I was before. The song ended, and I'm still with no motion. It actually “Dismantle my emotion”.

This album is just great. I've loved it to the bones. Try it so you can know how I (as well as many other) were and still impressed by this band.
