Are you having a bad day, pissed off? You should put in BORN FROM PAIN’s latest album “War” and release your aggressions. “War” is a bloody mixture of Thrash and NYC Hardcore with a touch of shrapnel-pierced, mid-paced chugging Death Metal, ala BOLT THROWER and BENEDICTION. Bruising breakdowns and ogerish vocals are the norm on “War” and have been since the band’s inception in 1997, marking the group as one of Europe’s first Metal Core bands. In this instance, the term “Metal Core” refers to the original, truest sense, like Victory Record’s early roster before Emo and Pop Punk invaded the scene and diluted this term’s meaning.

The vocals are always tough as are the breakdowns. The riffs roll and churn. Tracks like “Relentless” and “Stop at Nothing” feature positive lyrics empowered through mantra-like chanting and crunchy, earth shaking rhythm sections without forgetting to make memorable grooves and melodic passages.

When I first listened to “War”, I marveled at the group’s affinity for Death Metal, especially the manic, mid-paced style of Britain’s BOLT THROWER, BENEDICTION, and NAPALM DEATH. Then Death Metal vocals came into the foray and my jaw dropped. Upon further investigating the album, I noticed these vocals came from none other than genuine Death Metal vocalists who guest appeared on the album. Jan-Chris de Koeijer of Dutch Death dealers, GOREFEST lent his Neanderthal vocals to “Bury Me Fighting”. Grind legend Barney Greenway of NAPALM DEATH also appeared on the album. One of the album’s most up-tempo tracks, “Behind Enemy Lines”, Greenway trades ferocious vocal lines with BFP’s Ché Snelting. Throw in Lou of SICK OF IT ALL, and you have a who’s who of extreme music.

Metal Blade has a good thing going with BORN FROM PAIN. The group balances melody, aggression, speed, making for one tasty Crossover/Metal Core album. BFP would fit well on tour with a number of today’s popular Metal Core and Hard Core bands like HATEBREED, UNEARTH, AGNOSTIC FRONT, MACHINE HEAD and many other bands known for starting a shit-stomping pit!
