Cool Songs: Faces, So Far Today

Savatage is a well known band not only because of releases like “Gutter Ballet”, “Hall Of The Mountain King”, “Edge Of Thorns” etc but also because of the many projects that have been born by its members. Most of you already know Trans Siberian Orchestra, Dr. Butcher, Circle II Circle and Jon Oliva’s Pain. There are also many other bands that include a Savatage member like Metalium and Mission Control (the last band that Criss ever played as a lead guitarist).

So, here we have the debut solo album of Chris Caffery, lead guitarist of Savatage! “Faces” comes in a 2cd edition. The first cd is called “Faces” and the second one “God Damn War”. The good thing with this release is that it is the less similar to Savatage comparing with the other bands that the group’s members have formed. Chris Caffery presents us some good power metal music. Of course there are tracks that remind of Savatage like “Pisses Me Off” but in general this release is very close to American power metal sounds. One big surprise in “Faces” is that all vocals have been held by Chris Caffery! Despite the risk of that move Chris did it very well and his voice sounds like Alice Cooper or Dee Snider sometimes. Another hidden ability of Chris Caffery!

Something else you must know about this release is that id doesn’t focus only on power metal but you can find even some blues parts in songs like “Music Man”. All these are for the first cd “Faces”. “God Damn War” is more straight and I would describe it as raw power metal. The production is very good and you will enjoy the listening of both discs. I say both discs because this is not one release. “Faces” and “God Damn War” are two different albums that Chris decided to put in his debut release. “God Damn War” may be released as an individual album in the future according to the artist. And this is the only disadvantage of this release. There are 25 songs in the 2 cds and the final result is a little bit tiring sometimes.

To sum up, “Faces” is a good heavy/power album that will satisfy Savatage fans and a good recommendation to fans this music. My only wish is to leave projects for now and release a new Savatage album but unfortunately this seems to be impossible…
