Cool Songs: Justus Ex fide Vivit, Cold Flame of Death, Without Eyes and Anything Above

Terrorizer magazine released a Middle East scene report in their May 2007 issue. The article featured many great, unknown bands from Middle Eastern countries. Their failure to mention Israel’s TANGORODRIM was possibly due to the writers looking for unsigned talent. On the other hand, maybe they chose to stay away out of fear for TANGORODRIM plays evil black metal in the truest sense: evil, raw and fast.

TANGORODRIM definitely worships at the ibex throne of black metal gods like MAYHEM, CELTIC FROST, BLAPSHEMY, and especially DARKTHRONE. The group blazes a fiery path of speedy, conventional black metal complete with raw, trebly guitars and blasting drumbeats. Many of the songs on “Justus Ex fide Vivit” invite the listener in with wild feedback before blasting away or settling into a DARKTHRONE/CELTIC FROST-like power chord grooves. Such is the norm, but the album also has a doomier side. The title track’s guitars trudge on with a steady, churning groove. Then “Without Eyes and Anything Above” begins on the DARKTHRONE tip, but a bass line brings down the tempo. Soon the guitars follow the bass, bringing in an incessant, doomed rhythm.

Vocalist, Larenuf has a distinct voice sharing characteristics of legendary black metal vokillers as Tom G. Warrior (CELTIC FROST) Nuclear Holocausto (BEHERIT) and Attila (MAYHEM). He roars barbaric curses upon the followers Judeo/Christian values and their pathetic dogma. The group’s weak grasp of the English language carries over into the vocals, which makes Larenuf’s voice even more barbaric sounding. During faster moments, Larenuf does not fully annunciate his words, which combined with his guttural pitch, makes a difficult navigation of their lyrics. He also employs an array of vocal theatrics such as painful groans and Tom G. Warrior-like OOH.

Some of the lyrical translations from English to Hebrew make certain lyrics hard to comprehend. For example two lines in “When Heir of the Horned Shamelessly Attack” say, “The longing for the sun is intense/Anyway, just hell controls it.” Even with poor translations, tracks like the title song match the savagery of their music. The subject of this track is a gathering of an elaborate black mass held in a deep forest. The story’s characters pervert and inverse the symbols of the Church such as showering in blood, perverting the concept of a clean spirit. The hatred towards those of the lamb magnifies tremendously in the lines, “I am ready to carry that cross/But only if it’s made of priest bones/Only if it weighted a ton of holly intestines.”
