Cool Songs: Behond the Vastness and Sorrow, I will Lay My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM has a strong connection to the enchanting landscapes in their surrounding Washington State homeland. The group lives a self-sufficient lifestyle, growing their own food and cultivating life stock. They also apply this back-to-nature idea to their music. Black metal is their gateway for expressing man’s relationship to nature. Black metal is the vessel for which they contain their disdain for the modern way of life, praising the code of life long abandoned and scorning mankind’s destruction of the earth.

Their latest effort “Two Hunters” conveys the tumultuous force of nature with contrasting moods. The opening instrumental “Dia Artio” floats along on a cloudy mist of enchanting keyboards, melodic guitars, and a slow drum beat. This track paints pictures of majestic snow capped mountains and crystalline waterfalls. The next track is not as inviting. As its title suggests, “Behold the Vastness and Sorrow,” the listener will now embark upon a journey of darkness. This track is a supernatural tale of nature’s capacity to harm. Nature is pissed at Christianity’s neglect of the earth, and comes in the form of a rider to cleanse the world of this religion. Blast beats, harsh vocals, and hovering tremolo licks express the ensuing chaos. After “Behold the Vastness and Sorrow,” the group returns to serene pastures. “Cleansing” features tribal drumbeats, a layer of rich keyboards, and Jessica Kinney’s beautiful voice. This track creates a scenario, both lyrically and musically, of a tribe of warriors praising their pagan gods around a large bon fire at dusk.

“Two Hunters” is an engaging album. WOLVES succeed in carrying out their pagan ideas—praising natures wonder and cursing humanity's neglect of the earth. The music is quite simple; especially the guitars that stay around the same portion of the fret, but the arrangements, tones, and lush atmospheres superbly communicate the group’s primal themes. The overall vibe is reminiscent of IN THE WOODS “Heart of Ages.” WOLVES IN THE THRONE room has become one of the more talked about USBM bands in the last couple of years. “Two Hunters” should push them even further into the spotlight.
