I think that there is no need of introducing this band, actually a living legend of folk metal, one of the best folks in the world. They started their career in 1997 and since then, recorded a lot of stuff, mainly of very high quality (fantastic reviews all over the world). The songs are sung in Swedish, and it is so, because Katla (ex-vocalist who left the band because of a throat tumor) is Fenno-Swedish ( minority in Finland, who speak Swedish). What is more, nowadays there is none of the bands founding fathers in the line up: some of them quit or have been removed, whereas Teemu Raimoranta died in 2003 (probably committed suicide).
This short EP is what I like the most: strong and dynamic compositions without any redundant and additional fills, variety of sounds, instruments, and ideas, and freshness. FINNTROLL surely know how to please the public with their music. The folk elements fit here like a glove, you cannot say, that there is too much of anything, in fact, as long as you listen to this album, you want more! Everything is given in the right proportions and that fleshy vocal is just fabulous. From the beginning till the end we witness the Scandinavian feast – the songs, despite being heavy and even fleshy, create the atmosphere of fun. The very last track – Hel Vete, sounds as if it was a relation from some sort of a church fair. The atmosphere sometimes annoys, but it is FINNTROLL style and no one dares to criticize it!
Trollhammaren is a fantastic short album, full of surprises and different sounds. The black/death music combined with church fair elements, creates a fabulous medley.
