Earache recording artist, MUNICIPAL WASTE has opened a few metallic ears in the last couple of years. Originally released in 2005, their Earache debut, “Hazardous Mutation” received a considerable amount of good press. This considered with the generous fan response, the album is becoming a thrash classic. The cult following the album has produced further supports that statement. Earache’s peeps on the inside must understand they have something special with the waste for them to re-release the album just a year after its initial release. Not only did it receive a reissue, this time you will get a bonus DVD with a live performance from a hometown show in Richmond, Virginia.

What makes MUNICIPAL WASTE so exceptional? They take all the fun elements of ‘80s Thrash and Hard Core. One facet the group has a firm understanding of is how to balance mind-blowing speed and memorable riffs. Stylistically they flow from finger shredding traditional metal riffs, to wrist-blurring speed picks, to fat, Hard Core grooves. Vocalist Tony Foresta revisits the fast Hard Core and Speed Metal vocals of such great crossover acts from the glory days of Thrash and Hard Core like NUCLEAR ASSAULT, D.R.I. and S.O.D. Throw in a toxic dose of CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER and SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and you have a good idea of the band’s sound.

Speed and aggression were part of the reason crowds followed bands like S.O.D. and NUCLEAR ASSAULT. The ‘80s lifestyle of partying also gained favor with the youth of America. MUNICIPAL WASTE carries on this tradition, making no qualms about their love for beer and buds (green). “Mind Eraser” and “Bangover” are anthems for the party animal, metal head. The whole album has an aura that harkens back to the days when Metal and Thrash were about having fun without the posing and grim posturing found in today’s extreme acts.

Live in Richmond 2006 is a live testament to a band that lives to party and thrash the guts out of any audience they play for. Created by DaybyDay productions (this production team also filmed the group's video for “Unleash the Bastards”) the DVD shows the band answering questions while chilling at home tossing down a few cans of the shittiest beer you can think of. These guys are serious beer drinkers. Guitarist, Ryan Waste is shown in nearly every scene drinking Milwaukee’s Best. He even uses his beer for culinary purposes, pouring it into the frying pan with scrambled eggs then bacon. Bassist, Land Phil takes the beer-food combination even further, using his 40 oz. in place of milk with his cereal.

The concert—filmed in front of their hometown crowd in Richmond, Virginia— continues to show the band’s sense of humor. A wizard, complete with robe and sneakers, introduces the band. Once they get going, mass mayhem ensues. The concert looked like this: circle pits break out everywhere; stage divers assail the head and hands of the mob in front of the stage until the group brings out a trampoline so fans can really vault into the crowd. One fan gets completely naked and still stage dives (the people catching him didn’t think him doing this was all that great), and Dave, the drummer, dons a shark outfit for “Terror Shark.” Without the music, one could mistake his surroundings for a beach with the flying beach balls and noodles.

When the credits start rolling you may think the DVD is over, but there is more. At the end of the DVD, there is a collection of random, fake videos like one about a bum singing about beer. There is also a short cartoon titled “Teenagers from Uranus.” If you have poor taste this one is right up your alley, or should I say Hershey highway. It is a cartoon about a army of cock and balls that invade Earth and are commanded by a talking butt hole. Classy!
