'Diktat Omega' is the third album by the French black metal band, CRYSTALIUM. 'Diktat Omega' is loud and harsh black metal with a good amount of atmosphere. The album’s loud, in-your-face production come courtesy of Tournier, who has produced albums by many of France’s well-known extreme metal acts like NEHEMAH and HIMINBJORG.

The drums are bombastic, which the band prefers to make known right from the album’s beginning note, and speed also rules the guitars. The guitars have the cryptic sound that black metal is known for producing, and when combined with floating synths, the music displays a considerable amount of atmosphere. The guitars mostly hover around the same part of the neck with fast tremolo licks, but the duo breaks at the appropriate times with standard power chords. There are also occasional moments of soloing, used more for effect than technical aspects. “Mon Intime Genocide” begins with high pitch guitar notes and flesh-ripping fast solos.

The band prefers to be described as “war black metal.” The violence of the music reflects this moniker and, in the case of “Je”, the band goes full-on militaristic. The guitar notes on this track are muffled and robustly ring out, and regal keyboard notes comprise the background. What really gives this track a militaristic sound is the marching drum rolls, the same kind a foot soldier would hear marching into battle.

As mentioned above, ‘Diktat Omega’ is filled with dark atmospheres. Most of this atmosphere comes via the dream-like keyboard passages, although some parts drop the metal entirely in favor for ambience. Take the album’s outro instrumental “Empires et Méritocratie” for example. This track consists of ghostly female choirs, a low, distorted semi-machine noise in the background and a slow kettle drum.

There are a lot of elements of note on ‘Diktat Omega’, although the problem comes not in what they do, but what others have done in abundance. With black metal bands cropping up in ever corner of the world to imitate the Norse masters, it takes a fresh approach and/or exceptional talent to make a mark in the international scene. ‘Diktat Omega’ contains neither one of those attributes. Add songs that are overtly long and lyrics in French and you have an album that will never make it out of the realm of mediocre.
