SHADOWKEEP „A Chaos Theory”

SHADOWKEEP „A Chaos Theory” - okładka

Shadowkeep's A CHAOS THEORY hits you sounding like something from the past. Remember bands like Lethal with PROGRAMMED on Metal Blade Records, Crimson Glory with TRANSCENDENCE, Fates Warning with AWAKEN THE GUARDIAN and Queensryche's WARNING and RAGE FOR ORDER? Take those influences into the modern power metal world, and you should have a good idea of what you will hear on A CHAOS THEORY from England's Shadowkeep. While Shadowkeep is no indefinite clone of any influences, their style definitely has its similarities with those past heroes. And with bands like Queensryche basically out of the scene, not producing anything terribly spectacular since PROMISED LAND (1994), I'll take any band to fill their shoes.

This 2nd CD was released on the 26th of November 2002, and it follows CORRUPTION WITHIN (2000). Opening with 'A Distant Paradox', vocalist Rogue M. Vox quickly shows distinctive piercing, bringing thoughts of Warrel Dane's INTO THE MIRROR BLACK Sanctuary days and shades of Tom Mallicoat from the once powerful Lethal. Every respective metal fan should own both CDs from Sanctuary, and the Lethal disc mentioned in the first paragraph, but we should not stray very afar from Shadoweep. 'Seventeen' and 'Beware the Signs' continue to launch a classic mix of progressive power metal, with catchy lyrics and a riff- laden musical backbone. From opening to closing, there is no sign of weakness, as Rogue, Chris Allen (Guitar), Nicki Robson (Guitar), Steve Sk. Kightley (Bass) and Scott Higham formerly of Angel Witch (Drums) bring on an inevitable display of proficiency, playing on what appears to be a clinic for lesser musicians.

This is easily one of the better CDs for 2002, and that is why it is sad to report that Rogue has recently left Shadowkeep, a sad fact indeed. However, he has been replaced with Richie Wicks, who has played bass with Angel Witch in the past, but he has also done some vocal work, so this won't be his first time at the microphone. Richie most recently finished working on the latest Tygers of Pan Tang album. The future of Shadowkeep remains strong, and A CHAOS THEORY won't be their last triumph.
