I love it when bands try something different! Needless to say, blasting Metal 24×7 can be a bit daunting and boring. Personally, I really love exploring avant-garde/experimental bands, especially when I get tired of listening to my playlist. A few years back, I wrote on Post Death Soundtrack’s single “Chosen One”. Shortly after that, the band released a full-length. But, for some reason, I completely forgot about them. Thanks to a random suggestion on the internet, I listened to their full length.

In case you don’t know, Post Death Soundtrack is a duo based out of Canada. Their music is enigmatic and really different from what you hear on a radio station. 2019 full-length, “It Will Come out of Nowhere” explains their style perfectly. Promising to play an experimental spin-off of traditional doom metal, Post Death Soundtrack’s musical influences range from trip-hop, spoken work, trance and even middle-eastern folk. The album consists of 11 tracks, each of them having a distinct sound but still, it all holds together well as an album. For instance, the first track on the album, “Chosen Sons” is a more spooky tune whereas the very last track “Bridge Burner” is a crushing Doom metal track.

Among the eleven tracks the album features some of the highlights are the fourth track, “Expect no Sympathy”, sixth track, “Ramona Hills” and the ninth one “Fallout”. It is not that these are the only three tracks that stand out, but these are the three tracks that showcase their musicianship. While “Expect no sympathy” would make a perfect spooky soundtrack for a horror show, “Ramona Hills” is entirely different with more emphasis on the atmosphere and ambience than the spookiness. “Ramona Hills” is confusing at first, as this six-minute track starts off really slowly with a few engineered sound bites. This ambience persists all through the track, giving it a feeling, an emotion that can’t be explained in words. “Fallout” stays true to its name, as the song is more inclined towards an eerie atmosphere that gives it a post-apocalyptic kind of vibe.

If you read the review thus far, you would have noticed how I used the word “atmosphere” multiple times. The reason is that, the album is emphasized on that particular aspect. It is almost as if the first half sets the mood for the second, and that it culminates into a pulverising and crushing doom metal track. Yet another thing that I noticed in their instrumentation is that it becomes multi-dimensional over time. In the sense, if the song begins with a simple synth tune, it gets layered with as many as elements possible. The best thing is that none of the elements sounds lost in the mix. Production-wise, Post Death Soundtrack’s decision to go more polished and cleaner than a standard “Potato” Doom production is really wise. Because, if only the songs were produced Potato-ish, the foretold elements would have definitely overlapped.

Overall, “It Will Out of Nowhere” is a pleasant surprise for me. I see this album to be the benchmark to Post Death Soundtrack’s staple experimental sound. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the duo have to offer in the near. They just released a new single, maybe there will be a followup album. I expect it to be nothing less than what they did here. More experimentation, and less stereotypes! That being said, this album is a banger and I recommend it to anyone who love to explore more of Doom Metal.
