EXCESSUM is a nasty-sounding two-man, black metal band from Sweden. The blasphemous duo prefers to align themselves with the anti-frills, anti-keyboards, grim side of this country’s metal scene like MARDUK, THE BLACK, and DARK FUNERAL. DARK FUNERAL’s sound on “Secret of the Black Arts” is the most noticeable comparison.

EXCESSUM’s two members, Contagion and Dahlstrom seem to harness the power of the artic winds found in the most northern regions of the group’s country. The group achieves those frigid-feeling riffs through fast picking that blurs all the notes together and a fuzzy guitar tone. Guitar notes rise and fall on the fret board to reach a crestfallen state. One of most dramatic moments on “Death Redemption” is Contagion’s agonizing scream, ‘I fell into the darkest abyss’ during “The Mournful Held Within.” Just like the image he is describing, the guitar note sharply falls when he accents his last word. Another great guitar passage comes on the end of “Lies of the Deceiver” when the guitar duo break into a grandiose, palm-muted, thrash gallop. If you don’t pump your fist to this part, you simply aren’t true!

The drummer, not listed at the time of this release, does a superb job of keeping the pace and establishing the ultra-fast pace, although he doesn’t perform any memorable rolls or fills like Hellhammer of MAYHEM. The cymbals are slightly loud and the skins are not quite loud enough. Furthermore, Contagion’s mid-range vocals are dry and raspy. On the plus side, being unable to reach the enigmatic highs of an Ihsahn or Rob Darken has its advantages. For instance, his lyrics are more decipherable. The closest comparison is Baron Von Abaddon’s style on BLACK FUNERAL’s “Vampyr-Throne of the Beast.”

“Death Redemption” does not set the standard for true black metal. There are many areas for improvement, and the music EXCESSUM creates is by no means groundbreaking. You probably won’t play this disc over and over in your stereo. It surely will not become a black metal classic. It, however, will satisfy your hunger for harsh, grim black metal that is so hard to find in today’s glamorous scene.
