The German melodic metal basement complex HELLOWEEN around Ex-Pink Cream 69 singer Andi Deris throw out an album to the market that surely will split up the fans into 2 teams. I am talking about the „Keeper of the seven keys – The legacy“. Around 18 years after the release of the two cult discs “Keeper of the seven keys pt. I and II“ HELLOWEEN venture to do the big step and try to tie up to the ancient success. Only a few albums in the history of German heavy metal have got such a legendary reputation like the albums mentioned above. Being an appetizer HELLOWEEN cast a 3 track single called „Mrs. God“ in front of us and you could say: „It´s sink or swim!“.
Excited with glowing eyes I want to listen to the first sounds, but already while the first beat resounds, I am very shocked and I really ask myself, if HELLOWEEN want to joke with this song! Using THIS song for a single, this is nearly perkiness! In fact “Mrs. God” is so stupid that is starts to become good, but THIS to release in deepest seriousness, I am not used to know that from HELLOWEEN! You can easily rumble this song like you can have a look through a clean glass pane… Very predictable, but anyway very catchy. After the first attack I thought to myself: That can only become better! And by all means, the next song „King for a thousand years“ surprises me with its proud 14 minutes. It can balance the flop „Mrs. God“. And indeed the 5 men show us that they can do very good songwriting and they can play their instruments. In this song you can nearly drown and you also could have found it on Tobias Sammet´s „Avantasia“ album. Very epic with clean female opera vocals, then heavy, sometimes scary and very detailed, „King for a thousand years“ could have been released as the single song. For the Japanes people they need, of course, something special and so they bring with „My life for one more day“ a melodic metal stamper to the start that dashes itself and sometimes reminds on GRAVE DIGGER (sample on www.helloween.org). Also for our Japanese friends there´s the „Mrs. God“ videoclip. „Run (the name of your enemy)“ is again typical HELLOWEEN and typical melodic metal and simply a typical headbanger.
Overall HELLOWEEN don´t play really „new“ stuff. Outstanding is just the 14 minutes opus called „King for a thousand years“, which is only really wonderful to listen to. You can be excited, if the Hamburg guys Andi Deris (vocals), Markus Großkopf (bass guitar), Michael Weikath (guitars), Sascha Gerstner (guitars) and the new entrant Dani Loeble (Drums, Ex-Rawhead Rexx) can connect to the legendary „Keeper“ albums… Good luck!
